Maintain A Professional Image
It’s important as a professional to maintain a professional image. Not only in the way we look but also in the way we conduct business.
If you are to meet with clients, be sure to dress appropriately as you are representing your company as well. Making a good first impression is important and you only get one chance to do this.
When scheduling a meeting with the potential client, be on time. It’s ok to show up at least 15 minutes early as well. You know that your time is valuable, but so is theirs and it’s important to respect that potential client’s time.
Be sure to put your cell phone on silent or vibrate and put it away as your potential client deserves to have all of your attention during the time they have set aside to meet with you.
Also, remember to not chew gum as you’re meeting with the client. There’s nothing more disturbing than to have someone smacking on gum while discussing business.
If you have any personal issues going on, don’t bring them to the meeting with you! Whatever issues are going on at home, leave them there. There’s no need to discuss your personal issues with your potential client or even mention that they need to excuse your behavior because of something going on elsewhere. Remember, it’s none of their business and doesn’t concern them in any way. They agreed to meet with you to discuss business, not personal issues.
Lastly, if your place of business is not appropriate to meet with clients, choose to treat them to lunch or coffee. Of course, if you are on a tight budget, a coffee meeting would work best for you!
